How to prepare wood for polyurethane
- Read the label and technical sheet first. Record approved surfaces, sanding sequence, temperature, humidity, applicator, thinning rules, recoat window, cure, and safety requirements.
- Identify everything already on the wood. Wax, silicone polish, oil, stain, filler, glue, and an unknown old coating can interfere with adhesion or cure.
- Make a representative sample. Use the same wood, sanding grits, stain, drying interval, polyurethane, coat count, and sheen planned for the project.
