There is no single best wood finish for every woodworking project. For a hard-wearing indoor table or cabinet, polyurethane or another durable varnish is usually the practical choice. For fast professional spray finishing, lacquer is common. Shellac excels as a fast-drying decorative finish and sealer but is vulnerable to alcohol and water. Oil emphasizes grain and is easy to renew, while wax is best treated as a low-protection final sheen rather than a durable standalone tabletop finish.

Choose by the project’s actual failure risk
Start with what the surface must resist. A display box mainly needs appearance and dust protection. A dining table faces water, heat, abrasion, alcohol, cleaners, and food spills. A cabinet door needs cleanability and blocking resistance. A turned bowl may have a manufacturer-specific contact-use requirement. Outdoor wood faces sunlight, moisture, and movement and belongs in a separate exterior system.
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory recommends considering appearance, protection, cleanability, wood properties, and expected service. That is more useful than ranking finishes from “best” to “worst” without naming the project.
Polyurethane and varnish
Varnish is a broad family of film-forming finishes; many consumer products marketed as polyurethane are varnish systems modified with polyurethane resins. Both waterborne and solvent-borne formulations exist. A cured film gives furniture and cabinetry a cleanable barrier that penetrating oil alone does not provide.
Choose water-based when preserving a pale wood color, lower odor, or faster recoating is important and the specific product fits the use. Choose oil-based when a warmer amber appearance and longer open time are desirable. Neither label is a shortcut: follow the manufacturer’s preparation, temperature, coat, recoat, ventilation, and full-cure instructions.

Lacquer
Lacquer dries rapidly and can build a smooth, polishable film, which is why it is common in professional cabinet and furniture production. Traditional solvent lacquer produces flammable vapors and requires suitable ventilation, ignition control, respiratory protection, and spray equipment. It is not a casual indoor spray-can substitute for a purpose-built finishing area.
Repair and compatibility can be advantages, but “lacquer” covers multiple formulations. Do not mix lacquer, sanding sealer, stain, and topcoat from incompatible systems based only on the generic category name.
Shellac
Shellac is valued for warmth, fast drying, repairability, and its use as a sealer in compatible systems. It can be an excellent decorative furniture finish, especially when the project will not see wet glasses or alcohol. For dining and bar surfaces, its sensitivity to water and alcohol is a significant drawback.
Waxed and dewaxed shellac do not have identical topcoat compatibility. If another finish will go over shellac, confirm the full schedule with both manufacturers and test it on scrap.
Oil finishes and oil/varnish blends
Drying oils and commercial oil blends can make grain look deeper without creating the thick appearance of a high-build film. They are forgiving to wipe on and easy to refresh. Their tradeoff is lower resistance to scratches, standing water, heat, and chemicals compared with a well-built film finish.
A product called “tung oil finish” is not necessarily pure tung oil; it may be a formulated blend. Use the safety data sheet and directions for the product in the can. Let each coat cure as directed before adding another product or putting the item into service.
Wax
Wax adds a smooth feel and low sheen to decorative wood or a compatible cured coating. It is not the first choice for a heavily used tabletop because it provides limited water, heat, abrasion, and solvent resistance. Wax contamination can also make future recoating difficult, so record what you applied.
Stain is color, not automatically protection
Many stains primarily color wood and require a compatible clear protective coat. Combination stain-and-finish products exist, but their directions control. Do not assume a darker stain creates more durability indoors, and do not topcoat until the stain has dried for the specified time.
A reliable finishing workflow
- Define the use. List water, heat, abrasion, chemicals, sunlight, and contact requirements.
- Select one compatible system. Prefer a stain, sealer, and topcoat schedule the manufacturers approve.
- Prepare scrap from the same wood. Sand it through the same grits and test the entire schedule.
- Control dust and contamination. Remove wax, silicone, glue squeeze-out, and sanding residue using methods permitted by the finish maker.
- Stir; do not improvise. Follow directions about stirring versus shaking, thinning, applicator, wet film, and sanding between coats.
- Respect full cure. A surface can feel dry long before it reaches service hardness or chemical resistance.
Safety that belongs in every finish plan
- Read the label and safety data sheet before opening the container.
- Provide the specified ventilation and personal protective equipment. Spraying can require controls beyond those used for brushing.
- Eliminate flames, pilot lights, sparks, and other ignition sources when working with flammable products or vapors.
- Handle finish-soaked rags exactly as the label and local fire/waste authority direct. Drying oils and oil-based finishes can generate heat and ignite when rags are piled together.
- Assume old painted surfaces may contain lead until evaluated; sanding can generate hazardous dust.
- Use only products whose manufacturer supports the intended food-contact or children’s-item use after full cure. “Natural” is not a safety certification.
