A penetrating exterior oil is a reasonable alternative when you prefer a lower-build appearance and simpler renewal. It will not behave like a thick clear film. Expect to inspect and refresh it more often, especially on horizontal surfaces exposed to direct sun and standing water.
Best exterior finish for decks and fences
Deck boards experience abrasion, water, sun, and movement. Use a coating or penetrating stain explicitly labeled for horizontal deck surfaces. Do not assume a clear furniture topcoat is suitable simply because it says “outdoor.” Manufacturer instructions often exclude decks because the wear and moisture conditions differ.
For fences and rough-sawn wood, penetrating semi-transparent stain is often the practical choice.
